A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: Life can offer us seasons of shadows and darkness. These times can feel overwhelming and may even distort our truth. In times of trouble, I imagine a pristine white flower emerging out of the dark; as it opens up, it begins to reflect my truths in various glowing colors. Like stained glass, they glow the profound truths that we are loved, not alone, and worthy just as we are. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5. Chiaroscuro allows the viewer to peer into a moment and be a part of the tension for a brief second. It was my intention with Truth Reflected for you to share that moment with me.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: 'Beyond' illustrates a moment where the subjects fail to exist in the present. This disconnection, therefore, generates a curiosity component as viewers are left wondering what the subjects could be looking at. Complimented by strong uses of shadows and highlights, the composition is successful in making the presence of the subjects more real and interesting. As abstract linework appears in the light and disappears in the shadows, the subjects take on different relationships with each other and the setting they are placed in. While very similar in technique, each line and shadow are presented uniquely in order to bring forth a different perspective on life and portraiture. I believe this artwork relates to the theme of "light and shadows" because not only are the subjects existing in the shadows and looking towards the light, but they are presented with qualities that make them bolder, stronger, and more alive in the dark setting which consumes them. The subjects do not exist with us, viewers, we are merely observing their shadows as they move towards the light.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: I decided to take my subject matter back to the idea of Aphrodite from Sumerian, Greek and Roman myth. She is passionate and free, a force which is ungovernable and irresistable. My use of the idea of "light & shadow" for this piece was in the execution of light source and shadow play bringing the figure forward into the foreground. A deeper rendered style of chiaroscuro if you will.

Being conscious and accepting of contrast allows us the needed space to be our best selves. When we put in the hard work, like Olivia here, we can learn to appreciate both the crisp whites and the dark reds that life has to offer. “All the masterpieces of art contain both light and shadow.
