State: Pennsylvania
Country: United States

Dimensions: 10 x 8 x 1.5
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: "Lucky Shot" represents the play of etherial misty light against the shadowed solidity of the standing stones. What appears to be sharp contrast becomes, upon closer examination, the play of light over shadow, as subtle as if over velvet.

Dimensions: 24 x 18
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: I consider my entries in this competition “updated chiaroscuro”. I wanted my paintings to have male figures expressing a moment that might reveal dark thoughts or worries but in a more contemporary style of chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro, or “light”-“dark”, requires strong contrasts between light and dark. I interpreted that as meaning I had the liberty to use less shadowing and more flat tones of dark and light. I did not want to mimic a master artist such as Caravaggio but to honor his art as best I could.

$450.00

State: Florida
Country: United States of America

Dimensions: 18 x 26 x 1
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: Taken in the warm afternoon sun, this photo shows the stark contrast between the light and shadow that can be created in an image. The contrast in this photo was created by shooting with extremely dark and shadowed mangrove trees as the background and afternoon sun that shone down onto the spoonbill, but not the mangroves behind it. Due to the sun's position in the sky, the head of the bird which was hidden by its wing was plastered in the form of a shadow. This photo very blatantly shows "shadow" in the negative space of the photograph and in the shadow of the bird's head which is seen on the bird's wing and shows "Light" by the contrasting light which shines bright through the bird's wings.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: The deeper you dig inside yourself the darker it appears to be. What you don't realize is that you haven't dug deep enough. To find the light, you must trust your direction, your choices and what comes through from all around you. The real message is not in the darkness but in your soul.

Dimensions: 24 x 30
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: Initially, I approached this piece from a creative and free-flowing headspace with no ideas as to what would happen as the aftermath. Looking at it completed, I find that the darkness of the orifices contrast with the bright and "glowing" of the jellyfish show quite literally, the light and shadows. Researching the symbolism of jellyfish made it even more interesting to me as they often symbolize "energetic flow, movement, and entanglement" which makes me think of the balance of life; where there is light, there must be dark. Despite this contrast, jellyfish are unmoved. “Water currents take them exactly where they need to be…[t]hey live a life of complete surrender.”

Dimensions: 11 x 14 x 2
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: A black and white shadow Piece of the Palace of the Fine Arts, in San Fransisco. It is always wise to look beyond and within to find shadows that can emulate the contrast between night and day. To be transformed by the shadows, finer, brighter, and nonetheless wiser. Life is a journey, and we should never stop searching, especially within ourselves, to be transformed by such lights, all while the shadows teaching us various lessons throughout life. Even when one observes a Shadow & light piece, one would think the mind would immediately take them on an internal dialogue of shadow work within themselves, at least that is how it is for me.

State: Fl
Country: USA

Dimensions: 24 x 11 x 14
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: This piece represents my year between the shadows of sorrow and the light of understanding. This year has brought much despair, but being able to understand the shadows of life and being able to turn on the light has show me life is fragile and not forever. The mix between light and shadows, shows that you can work past total darkness and cast light on life's balancing act. Finding the right balance to stand strong and see past the shadows of despair and mix in light brings new ideas, new feelings and understanding the balance of life’s mysteries.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: This piece was created with gold leafing, the details change based on the amount of light or direction of light. The idea is more of an illusion for how we visualize images.

$200.00

State: FL
Country: United States

Dimensions: 16 x 20 x 1
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: I love this photo's symmetry and light play. The concentric circles shrink from the darker foreground to the washed-out light of the background in the distance that she's walking towards. I find with a lot of my photos that I love symmetry — power lines shrinking into the distance, a line of lights along a sidewalk and so on. This photo certainly falls into that category of symmetry, not just with the circles of the corrugated metal, but with the darkness steadily growing towards the light. It's almost like a portal to another dimension or a tunnel to the afterlife. This one is a nice reminder to me that there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, and even though it's one that sometimes we might not be able to see like this, we just have to keep on walking — even if we have to put out a hand to steady ourselves.

Beatriz Dominguez Aleman
$200.00

State: FL
Country: United States

Dimensions: 15 x 10 x 0.3
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: In order to cast a shadow, there must be light. Life experiences and phrases such as the ones that marked the artist, were part of the construction of her personal identity. The "Lights and Shadows" are an intrinsic element in her personal development, they live as one and together they are vital regarding her journey into self love and acceptance. They coexist and create gray areas in her persona, because without these negative phrases, the artist wouldn't be the person she is today. The shadows that are cast on her body are only temporary and superficial. They are not permanent, and will soon leave and/or change when the sun changes its position. Although they may leave marks, in shape of sunburns, they too are fleeting. The scars will heal, and new lights and shadows can appear. This time, with a new found sense of understanding, the artist understands these lights and shadows, and accepts them a part of her identity.

Dimensions: 24 x 18 x 1
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: Using the antebellum library's glass floors, Molly was illuminated from below and above in order to bring every nuance of the body to light...and shadow. Using this technique, I was able to 'paint' the details of the muscles, ribs, and hair. In the 1800's, Jones Memorial Library depended on daylight to provide lighting to the center of the library, so that patrons could read the spines of the books on the shelves. To that end, the library was built with frosted glass floors, so I installed lighting to get at least two opposing angles of light in order to generate great detail on my model. The whole day I used primarily natural light, but I could not resist using those beautiful glass floors as a diffuser and also a light table at the same time.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Light and Shadows" (150-500 words).: Using natural light in the attic of a Mason-Dixon line manor, model Kelli Wanveer struck a pose for me after we wrapped her in lace. This venue was at the end of the shooting day and was on my list, unofficially, of places I wanted to work with a model because of the unique light that this window has under the shade of old-growth hardwood trees.
